Word is that you’re new around here, eh? Welcome, and thanks for stopping by! I’m David, a “50-something” guy who loves to live life to the fullest; on this page I’ll quickly explain what the site’s about, why I started it, etc. so you can decide if you want to hang out in our community.
As long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to live a BIG life: You know, a life chock full of travel and excitement, populated with interesting friends, good food and drink, thrilling adventures, a successful career, a terrific family, etc. – and why the hell not? It’s MY life, and (as Thoreau so eloquently put it) I want to “suck all the marrow out of it”… Boo-Yah! Yep, even as a young man I knew this was EXACTLY the sort of life I was after; however, finding people who ACTUALLY LIVED this way to guide me was damn near impossible.
That’s because during my early 20’s I mostly surrounded myself with people who lacked any real spark or excitement for life; all they did was bitch about low-paying jobs and jerk bosses, the crappy economy and how everything was so expensive they couldn’t afford to have/do anything they wanted; they were so hypnotized by the monotony of their routines that their lives were pretty much just long weeks of mediocrity interspersed with boozy weekends. To be honest, for many of them this was about as good as it was ever going to get.
Without the benefit of mentors / Jedi Masters to teach me, I joined this legion of hung-over zombies and wandered through life mostly unfocused, spending all my time (& money) on wine, women and song. But despite being in a quasi-alcoholic haze most of the time, I always knew I wanted more out of life, but wasn’t sure how to actually get it, so I’d usually just grabbed another beer. Fortunately, after a few years of this pattern the student was ready and the teacher FINALLY appeared, turning up in the form of a book called “The Seeds of Greatness”. From the moment I picked it up and read it, I was hooked, and why not? I had finally found the guidance, inspiration and motivation that had been missing from life! From then on I devoured personal development books with the voracity of a pit bull in a meat locker, applying their unique lessons and strategies to my life whenever possible. I constantly set one goal after another, then worked hard to achieve them; and sometimes things worked out, others times not so much… but looking back now, in the long run I think I did okay.
It’s 20 + years later, and despite my life being far from perfect (No, really: If “perfect” is London, my life is Tokyo) I consider myself both lucky and blessed: I’ve been fortunate to have travelled to 26 countries and have seen some amazing things – if you’d like, feel free to check out my list of “99 Adventures So Far” to get a better idea of what I’ve been up to. Closer to home, I’ve learned to cook (and consume) good food, enjoy the company of great friends, thrived in a successful hospitality career, met and married the girl of my dreams – despite a couple of failed attempts – and am called “Dad” by a most inspiring young man, easily my proudest achievement of all. In the big scheme of things, I feel that my life – shit storms and all – has worked out to be pretty rewarding and fulfilling so far, and for that I’m extremely grateful. And I think it’s because my life has been so rewarding and fulfilling, lately I’ve wanted to share my experiences – both good and bad – with anyone who might find value in the lessons they have to offer. I wanted to create a forum where like-minded people could connect and share their stories and ideas with each other, all for the purpose of leading bigger, more remarkable lives. I figure once these conversations got started, there’s no telling what big ideas folks would bring to the table! And with that, www.davidknappfisher.com was created, a site with one simple goal:
To inspire people to dream big lives; and then help them realize those dreams.
Keeping these principles in mind, blog posts are broken into six categories:
Leadership: Inspirational stories, videos, interviews, book reviews, strategies etc. all focused on helping set and achieve personal goals.
Food (And Drink) Porn: Great food and tasty beverages always brings folks together, and are staples of any successful life. Why not pass on wicked recipes, wine suggestions, etc. to share the wealth?
World Travel: Stories, tips and advice for those who have traveled the globe, for those who want to. My favorite topic of all, as the picture above illustrates!
Dollars and Sense: Exceptional living usually cost money, so we’ve added a forum dedicated to wise money management; tips and methods readers use to finance their lifestyle, spend wisely or achieve a specific financial goal.*
Life Happens: Kind of a “grab bag” of all the good stuff that doesn’t fit in the other categories; inspired problem solving, “WTF!” moments, health tips, workout routines, humorous videos, etc. and everything else in between.
Random Musings: A soapbox where I (or anyone else) can and will drone on and on about whatever bright color or shiny object has caught our eye that day. Bring a blanket and pillow, just in case…
Okay, so that’s the grand tour – thanks again for stopping by.
