On a gorgeous sunny afternoon while in Australia last month, Paula and I went exploring along the beautiful, pristine coastline along Trinity Beach. And beautiful it is: Trinity is comprised of long stretches of sandy beaches that are interspersed with thick clusters of mangrove trees in the back, and big, jagged rocks in the front that amble into the Pacific. Truth be told, Trinity Beach is a little slice of paradise tucked far away from the hustle, bustle and noises of the big city, and it’s no wonder it’s such a popular place for Aussies to spend their vacation time.
On that particular day, we were walking along the shore and suddenly stumbled upon something that I found simply amazing – it was a single mangrove tree that had carved out a place for itself amongst the rocks, a landscape that doesn’t traditionally support growth of vegetation of any kind. Now whether what I’m about to say makes actual sense or not makes sense, when I saw this lone tree all I could think of was how persistent it must be to force itself to flourish in such an unforgiving and harsh environment; after all, as you can see from the photo it’s (a) the only tree growing there, and (b) is thriving despite having spouted roots smack dab in the middle of the rocks.
This little tree, with all it’s determination and will to survive amongst the rocks reminded me of the special breed of people who also constantly press on against the odds, regardless of what difficulties are put before them. Like this little tree, they too defy nature, testing their mettle over and over again all so they can eventually achieve their own goals. Like this tree, they too are that rare breed of fighter who ultimately achieves great things while the masses quit and walk away.
Like many of you, I find a lot of strength and encouragement in quotes that both stir my soul and get me thinking about how to press on when times are hard; and for some reason (for me at least) these days at times, seem to be especially hard. So partly in honour of this brave little tree, and partly to inspire my own self to press on through some challenges, I thought I’d post my favourite quotes about persistence, and who knows? Maybe I’m posting them at a time when you too, could use a little encouragement to press in your life.
Either way, I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

And my all time favourite quote about perseverance is from “The Last Lecture” by Randy Pauch: An amazing speech than no one should miss. Watch it here.
“The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people” ~Randy Pauch
