It’a F-R-I-D-A-Y! Woo Hoo! Looking forward to a great weekend hanging out with Paula and Tristan! But first, my final post of the week…
On Tuesday I posted a cool video of telephone conversations from “real” famous people (a.k.a. “faux” Hollywood types) to regular people (folks just like us!) from the gang over at Soul Pancake, with the “soul” purpose of the conversations was to brighten the recipient’s day. From the look of things, it worked out marvellously!
So today I want to introduce you to one of Soul Pancake’s regular contributors, a gentleman named Zach Annar, who is an Austin Texas based comedian that both writes and hosts a weekly video show on Soul Pancake. On each episode Zach focuses on things like fitness (“Workout Wednesday”) where he’ll demonstrate various exercise routines; or the complex topic of religion (“Have a Little Faith”) in which he interviews peoples of various faiths. And while on their own, these topics might sound a bit mundane, in Zach’s hands they are anything but.
“So” you may be wondering, “What makes his shows so great?” Great question! Zach’s shows are awesome for two reasons: First, his self-deprecating comedic approach to just about every single topic he tackles; and secondly, his wild sense of humour. Oh, yeah there’s actually a third thing – Zach’s incredible attitude. Did I forget to mention that he also has Cerebral Palsy?
How It All Began
Way back in the year 2010 Oprah (Yes, THAT Oprah) sponsored a contest called “Oprah’s Search for the Next T.V. Star”. It was a contest in which people sent in their show ideas on video, and the winner (who was to be determined by voters) would get a reality show on OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network. Zach got to work, filmed his audition and submitted it for scrutiny from the grand lady of daytime television herself, as well as her legions of loyal followers. Initially his numbers weren’t enough to put him in the lead; however, his video did catch the eye of some guy named John Mayer, who in turn posted it on his own video blog post asking for support for Zach. JM’s many “ex’s” must have seen it because the video went viral overnight, and Zach easily won the contest with over 2,000,000 votes cast in his favour! His response to this tsunami of support was classic Zach, and an indication of what was to come – he posted a video titled “Thank You, Internet! – I want to come and see you!”
For his efforts Zach got his own television show, $100,000, and a Chevrolet Equinox – which not being a wheelchair convertible vehicle is something that confuses me a bit still…? Regardless, Zach still made out like a bandit, and deservedly so. Sadly “Rollin’ With Zach” was cancelled after a mere six episodes; but happily, it caught the eye of someone at Soul Pancake. So with Zach now a free agent, they welcomed him, his wheelchair and his wicked sense of humour with open arms; and as they say, the rest is history!
Zach has over 80 videos under his belt; and the thing that really strikes me about him is that despite having been dealt a difficult hand, he is positive, upbeat, and above all makes an effort to be an active contributor to society. I suggest that you take the five minutes to watch the clip below – it’s hilarious – yet poignant and honest at the same time – of Zach answering viewers questions about his life, and his show. If you laugh just once, then you’ll realize that Zach has achieved his goal. I’m also guessing you’ll also become a big fan, just the way I have.
So without further adieu, Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you… ZACH ANNAR! Have a great weekend everyone!
