Heres some exciting news: By the end of 2014 Paula and I are on track to achieve our most ambitious goal ever – to be 100% debt free – including mortgage – and for that we say Yippee! It’s been a long haul, but as we near the finish line we can see how all the sacrifice and commitment over the past few years has been really worth it.
However, once we’ve made that final payment to the mortgage company, we have one more goal we want to achieve, that being our first goal of 2015; we’ve decided that before we go crazy buying all the cool stuff and taking all the awesome trips we’ve postponed for the past 4 years, (#1 being to the Hot Springs of Pamukkale) we have one final hill we need to climb (Okay, there’s no actual hill, it’s a metaphor) and it’s kind of a unique one. Our next “big” goal is to pre-pay our largest annual bills all up front, all so we can spend a minimum of 11 months with no expenses… Can you imagine? A full earning year with NO EXPENSES? In other words, our first goal of 2015 is to live a year completely free of financial worry and stress – and I say “Give me an Amen on that, my brother!”
Here’s how we figure it it will work: By paying our strata fees, ($3,000) land taxes ($1,200) and Hydro ($500) all up front in January 2015, it means the other 11 months of the year we won’t have any other major bills to pay for! You heard right: Baring any “unforeseen circumstances”, the only other major expenses we should incur (not including the day to day stuff like food, entertainment, etc.) are two car insurances, due in February and May. We are fortunate that my current job pays for my home & cel phones and internet, a sweet little perk that saves us approx. $2,000 a year; and since I’m too cheap to have any cable or satellite t.v. to pay for, we have nothing to worry about there. So like I said, barring too many “unforeseen circumstances”, we aim to live the high life in 2015, and beyond, all without any financial stress!
So what’s the plan moving forward, once this final goal is achieved? I’m glad you asked! We will set new goals to do all the things we’ve always wanted to; oh sure, we’ll still be frugal and save money however and whenever we can, but we also plan to spend a lot of it as well! I’m guessing mostly on travel, a few material items, but ultimately on creating lasting memorable experiences for us as a family. But I don’t want to get ahead of myself – it’s still nine months away, and in the mean time, we need to navigate a few land mines and never take our eye off the prize.
And in those times when random shit happens or the going gets a bit rough causing me to wonder if we are ever going to actually make it, I just look up at my goals board for inspiration of the amazing future we will have, and remind myself not to fret, we’ll get there… we always do. And don’t worry; I’ll make sure you come along for the ride.
