Because of a birth defect, when Jennifer Bricker was born, she surprised everyone by arriving into this world without any legs. Sadly, her parents greatest fear was that her condition would result massive medical bills, which they worried they wouldn’t be able to afford. Making a most heartbreaking decision, they chose to leave her at the hospital where she’d be put up for adoption. Not long after, along came Sharon and Gerald Bricker; a middle aged couple from a small town in Illinois. They took one look at the spunky legless baby before them and immediately decider to adopte her, citing that she “looked like she needed some love”. With everything signed and sorted, they took her home to raise alongside their three sons. Oh, there is one more thing you need to know about the Bricker household: It had one strict rule: No-one was to ever use the word “can’t”.
As she grew, Jennifer took this rule to heart; and despite not having legs, as a youngster she had one very ambitious goal in mind; she dreamed of becoming a gymnast, just like her idol – U.S. Olympic gymnastic team member and gold medal winner Dominique Moceanu. It was a goal her parents supported her fully on, because as as mentioned, “can’t” was not an acceptable word in their home. And between the determination and tenacity of this young woman, coupled with the love and support of her whole family, makes the rest of this store easily one of the most incredible things I’ve ever herd in my life… No, really. I’m totally serious.
If a novel was written depicting 31 year old Jennifer Bricker’s life so far, most people would use words like “impossible”, “unrealistic”, “far-fetched” and maybe even as an “over-the-top-fantasy” to describe her story – and they’d be right, since it’s all those things, and more. But what’s truly incredible is that it’s 100% true. More remarkably, it’s not just a story of a “spunky girl overcoming the odds”, but rather a complex story with so many inspiring parts and layers that nobody – and I mean nobody – can hear it without being both amazed by Jennifer, or affected by her amazing attitude towards life, love and forgiveness.
Rather than me trying to tell it and messing it up, I suggest that you hear it from Jennifer herself below. Trust me when I say that you’ll be glad you did, and that you won’t soon forget this remarkable young woman, who just happens to have no legs- nor any excuses for not living an incredible, full life.
